OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha scored a pair of first half goals Sunday and held on for a 2-1 win over SIUE men's soccer as the Cougars closed out nonconference play.
SIUE has dropped five games in a row and fell to 1-6. Omaha won for the first time this season to improve to 1-5-2.
The Mavs first goal came in the 30th minute, with Omaha taking advantage of a corner kick in the 30th. Maguire Perkins, headed home from the middle of the box after the corner came in from Yoshiki Igarashi.
Theo Klein made it 2-0 less than four minutes later when he banged home a cross that was misplayed in the box and the Mavs took the 2-0 lead into the break.
The Cougars pulled one back in the 52nd minute when they made a charge down the left side. Elliot Forestier delivered a perfect cross into the box where Evan Howard headed home for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Hugo Cornish nearly tied the game in the 73rd minute with a left footed shot from just inside the penalty area. His shot, headed for the corner, was saved by Omaha goalkeeper Kamy Ndione.
The Mavericks outshot the Cougars 11-5, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
SIUE goalkeeper Noah Scheidwieler made three saves in the loss.
Ohio Valley Conference play opens for SIUE Saturday as the Cougars play host to Lindenwood in the annual Homecoming game.
