Balanced Offense Not Enough for Cougars Thursday

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE had three players score in double figures and two more players with nine points, but the diverse offensive attack wasn't enough as Little Rock scored a come-from-behind 73-70 win Thursday at First Community Arena.

The Cougars fell to 3-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 10-7 overall. Little Rock improved to 3-2 in the league and 6-10 overall.

For the second game in a row, Kyle Thomas turned in a season-best performance, leading SIUE with 15 points and eight rebounds. Jo Valrie went 4-5 from three-point range and finished with a career-best 14 points. Arnas Sakenis tied his career high with 13 points for the second time in the last three games.

Darrion Baker and Darius Robinson each added nine points.

Valrie put SIUE in front with his first three-pointer of the night, 20 seconds into the first half and the Cougar stayed in front for the entire first half and led 40-32 at the break. The Cougars connected on 57 percent (13-23) of their shots in the first half and knocked down 7-12 (58 percent) three-pointers.

A layup from Sakenis with 16:56 to play in the game gave SIUE its largest lead at 50-34.

The Trojans' Kachi Nzeh buried a three-pointer to cap a 12-0 Little Rock run and tie the score for the first time at 60.

Baker yanked down an offensive rebound and scored on the putback to move SIUE in front 67-62 with 3:49 to play. SIUE would go the next 3:48 without a field goal.

A dunk from Tuongthach Gatkek put Little Rock on top for the first time at 68-67. Two free throws from Jonathan Lawson finished off an 8-0 Little Rock run and the lead was 70-67 with 1:44 to play. The Trojans pushed the lead out to five before Tyler King scored on a tip-in with a second to play.

SIUE shot 46 percent (25-54) overall and 9-22 (41 percent) from three-point range.

Lawson led all scorers with 23 points. Nzeh scored 15 points.

SIUE takes a week off before returning to the floor on the road at UT Martin Thu., Jan. 15.
