EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's tennis celebrated a 6-1 win Sunday at Southeast Missouri, marking the 100th win for Head Coach Adam Albertsen as the Cougars' leader.
Albertsen now has 232 career collegiate wins and becomes the third SIUE women's tennis coach to record 100 career wins. Bob Meyers (185/1979-89) and Bill Logan (100/1995-2005) previously achieved it.
"I'm so proud of the way this team came out and competed," said Albertsen. "We had a great week of training and the focus was really high coming in. What impressed me the most about the win was how we played in extremely windy conditions on the road. The on-court mindset stayed strong from start to finish."
SIUE improved to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference. SEMO dropped to 6-12 overall and 0-1 in the OVC.
This is the sixth consecutive season that SIUE women's tennis has reached double digits in victories. It also is the first time SIUE has defeated SEMO in Cape Girardeau since 2017.
The Cougars won the crucial doubles point Sunday. Elena Palioura and Cydney Rogers clinched No. 2 doubles for the Cougars with a 6-3 win over Maja Bajorek and Mia Mayerova. Stefaniya and Margaux Guibal Britt secured the team point with a No. 1 doubles point
The singles wins trickled in beginning with Anikina at No. 3 singles. She bested Sofia Zemstova 6-0, 6-2.
Her doubles partner Guibal Britt was next with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles over Bajorek.
After Elena Palioura lost a hard-fought No. 2 singles match to Juliette Demunck 6-2, 7-6, the Cougars clinched the team win at No. 4 singles with Jessica Li posting a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Yontha Tadoum.
Paloma Hennicaux also marked a milestone with her 50th career singles win, including her time at UTEP. Hennicaux defeated Mayerova 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Chloe Koons stepped up in the final match of the day with a No. 6 singles victory of 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 over Kristina Kozakova.
SIUE returns home this Friday for its final nonconference match of the season, a 1 p.m. meeting with William Woods at the SIUE Tennis Courts.
