SIUE Athletics proudly recognizes Mike & Karen Menendez for their unwavering support and commitment to the Cougar Champions Fund (CCF). Mike and Karen are SIUE alumni and have been a staple in the Edwardsville community for many years, and their consistent presence has made a lasting impact. 

Their generosity over the years have made a significant difference across all 16 varsity programs, positively impacting every SIUE student-athlete. 

Hear from Mike and Karen:  

Q: What does being a part of the SIUE community mean to you?   

In our case, being a part of the SIUE community is a part of who we are.  We grew up with the university in our local community.  We both graduated from SIUE, so it means a lot to us because we witnessed firsthand the school growing from something new as a startup, to now becoming a nationally recognized institution. Karen remembers her parents driving through the campus when it was initially under construction and their dream of one day having her attend the university. 

Q: What inspired you to support the Cougar Champions Fund? 

For us, the motivation for supporting the CCF was inspired by the leadership behind the fund.  The quality of the leadership team was key.  Andrew Gavin, his team, and the coaches exude a work ethic and spirit of dedication that is palpable. The leadership has created a program worthy of support and investment. 

Q: What is one SIUE moment you'll never forget?   

There are many SIUE moments of athletic achievements that are memorable.  However, as a 1979 graduate, it is hard to top that year's soccer team that won the NCAA Division I national championship. 

Q: Who is your all-time favorite Cougar athlete or coach/administer?   

Our favorite Cougar athlete is Jack Campion. In our minds, he embodies the spirit of Cougar athletics.  His all-out hustle and effort are inspiring and fun to watch.  Great coaching has also been a hallmark of the Cougar program with Hall of Famers like Harry Gallatin, Bob Guelker, Bob Meyers, Roy Lee and others.  Brian Barone has taken our basketball team to our first ever Division I tournament. We love the winning and family culture he continues to build upon.  

Q: One word to describe SIUE Athletics? 

Mike: "Passion" 

Karen: "FUN"
