SIUE Softball Sweeps Series vs. Southern Indiana

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE softball has now won five straight games after a doubleheader sweep Southern Indiana Sunday at Cougar Field.

The Cougars ran their overall record to 22-24 and OVC record to 13-8 with a 3-2 win in the opener and a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. Southern Indiana dropped to 13-25 overall and 10-11 in the OVC.

Heading into the last two OVC three-game series against Lindenwood and Southern Indiana with identical conference records, the Cougars excelled in winning five of their last six OVC contests.

In game one, Southern Indiana opened the scoring in the first inning on an Alyssa Mumaw RBI single.

The Cougars countered with two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Abby Harvell and Betsy Woodward.

Mumaw would tie the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the fifth, Juztyne Torres led off with a single to left. Torres would then score from first on a gapping blast to right center by Raegan Duncan.

Kiana Villa earned the win in relief and is now 5-1. Villa threw the final three innings and needed just 28 pitches.

In the nightcap, SIUE's offense collected 10 hits, including three by Duncan.

SIUE kicked into gear in the third inning with a four-run inning. Ashley Duran, Gretchen Trello and Harvell all recorded RBI hits.

Duncan's hit in the fourth put the Cougars up 4-1. Kaylin Fahy scored on the play as did Torres as she plated on a overthrow from the outfield.

Torres added more run in the sixth, a solo home run to left field.

Avery Arwood earned her third win of the week and second of the weekend, a five-inning performance. Haley Strain and McKayla Anderson each threw a scoreless inning for SIUE.

SIUE is now idle until next weekend when it travels to Nashville, Tennessee, for a three-game series against Tennessee State.
