EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Carson Bohnenstiehl scored with 10.1 seconds left on the clock Sunday as SIUE women's soccer gained a 2-2 tie against Valparaiso in the home opener for the Cougars at Korte Stadium.
With the game moved up due to sweltering temps in Edwardsville, the game was halted with 7:23 left in the first half when lightning struck the area near Korte Stadium.
When play resumed, Valpo held a 1-0 lead and took it into the locker room at halftime.
SIUE's offense kicked into gear late in the first half and much of the second half. The Cougars held an 18-10 shot advantage after 90 minutes and boasted an 11-2 edge in the second half.
Zeniyah Russell came off the bench for her first collegiate goal, a 1-1 equalizer at the 51:54 mark. She took a pass from Claire Nieroda and hit nothing but net.
Valparaiso, now 0-1-1 this season, fought back with a goal at 80:01 from six yards out from Alyssa Thomas.
SIUE, now 1-0-1 this season, continued to push with corner kicks and throw ins within its final third for much of the last five minutes of the game. Bohnenstiehl, among other SIUE players, pushed forward after Nieroda served the ball in the box. Bohnenstiehl's push of the ball over the line was reviewed and upheld by game officials with just a handful of ticks left on the game clock.
SIUE returns to action Thursday with a second straight home contest, a 7 p.m. match against Austin Peay at Korte Stadium.
