SIUE volleyball coach Todd Gober knows that now every week is a big week.
The Cougars, 19-3 overall and 7-1 in the GLVC, face Washington (Mo.) at 7 p.m. on the road on Wednesday and then return home for GLVC matches against Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m., respectively.
Washington, ranked No. 2 nationally among NCAA Division III schools, will be a strong test for the Cougars. Washington has won five of the seven matches in the bragging rights battle.
After facing the Bears, the Cougars will need to turn focus on the GLVC beginning with a crucial match against Indianapolis.
"We have a shot at knocking off one of the top three teams in our conference," said Gober. "We've got to keep our focus."
Gober said the parity in the GLVC has made predicting winners in the league to be one of pure guesswork.
"We have a tough remaining schedule. Everybody has a tough schedule though," he said. "The conference race is starting to narrow down to a few teams.
Gober hopes his front line will be able to carry the Cougars through the rest of the season.
Led by senior middle hitter Andrea Voss (St. Rose), the Cougars are No. 1 in hitting percentage and No. 2 in blocks behind Indianapolis.
Gober lavished praise on several players on his team. "It's been a different player step up each match," he said. "It's easy to look for all of the positives. I'm trying to look for our weaknesses and address those."
