CHARLESTON, W.V. - Break out the brooms.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville swept through the Charleston Tournament without losing a single game, defeating host Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan.
The wins give SIUE a 7-1 record, the best so far in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Both wins on Saturday also were region victories, which are important for NCAA Tournament considerations.
In the Charleston match, SIUE dominated 30-14, 30-20, 30-18. Andrea Voss and Tina Talsma recorded 14 kills each. Talsma, a sophomore transfer from Ontario, Canada, was without an attack error in the match.
SIUE recorded a .342 hitting percentage as a team.
The Cougars came back with a 58-kill performance against West Virginia Wesleyan, including a season-high 16 from sophomore outside hitter Kindra Westendorf. Voss added 14 kills without an attack error, and Talsma provided 11 kills.
SIUE nearly had its string of consecutive games stopped in game one, holding on for a 31-29 triumph. SIUE won games two and three 30-21 and 30-13.
The school record for consecutive games won is 14, set in October 1997. With 12 games won in a row, SIUE can break that record in its season opener on Wednesday against McKendree. The first serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center.
