Southern Illinois University Edwardsville threw its best one-two punch of outside hitter Kindra Westendorf and middle hitter Heather Bonde in a three-game romp over Missouri-St. Louis 30-17, 30-23, 30-14 on Friday at the Vadalabene Center.
Westendorf led all hitters with 15 kills while Bonde added 13. The Cougar duo helped SIUE hit .327 as a team.
SIUE improved to 17-5 overall and 8-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UMSL fell to 7-11 overall and 3-6 in GLVC play.
It was perhaps as big of a night for the Cougar defense as it held all of UMSL's hitters in check. UMSL hit -.017 for the match and did not have any hitters with more than five kills.
SIUE libero Allison Buss turned in another strong effort with two service aces and 18 digs. As a team, SIUE collected 11 blocks, including seven from Bonde.
The Cougars are back at the Vadalabene Center on Saturday afternoon for a first-serve at 1 against Quincy.
