SIUE Wins Thriller Over No. 21 Rockhurst

         EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- If Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's thrilling win against 21st-ranked Rockhurst was on ESPN it would have been an "Instant Classic."
         The Cougars fought off five match points in the fifth game to win 30-14, 28-30, 22-30, 30-24, 22-20.
         Senior Heather Bonde led SIUE with career-high 25 kills and a team leading .444 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Krystal Majernik notched a career-high with 73 assists adding 11 digs.
         The Cougars are on a five-match winning streak as they improve to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks drop to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in league play.
         SIUE hammered Rockhurst in the first game only to have the Hawks take the next two. With game four tied at 17-17, the Cougars outscored the Rockhurst 13-7 to send it to a decisive fifth game.
         The Cougars gained a 7-5 edge early and then led 14-13 in the last game. Then Rockhurst outscored SIUE 7-6 to take a 20-19. The Cougars won the next three points as they received kills from Kindra Westendorf and Bonde and a attack error from Nathalia Rivera that sealed the victory.
         Westendorf finished the match with 10 kills with three of those coming on match points.
         Freshman Kate Hofeldt recorded career-highs with 16 kills and 12 digs with a .302 hitting percentage. Kim Potthast had 12 kills and Tina Talsma finished with 11.
         Senior Allison Buss continued to shine with 25 digs, and freshman Mallory Clements added a career-high 18 digs.
         Rivera led Rockhurst with 19 kills and 22 digs. Rachel Fowler added 16 kills, and Kecia Jennings notched 66 assists for the Hawks.
         SIUE hit .260 for the match, while Rockhurst had a .167 hitting percentage. The Cougars out dug the Panthers 97-79 in the contest.
         The Cougars will travel to Lewis and UW-Parkside next weekend for more GLVC action.
