Cougars Top Ferris in NCAA Tournament

         ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball opened up the NCAA Tournament with a three-set match victory over Ferris State.
         The Cougars extended their winning streak to 19 matches with a 30-23, 30-24, 30-21 victory. SIUE advances with a 28-5 record. Ferris State ended its season and 22-10 mark.
         SIUE Coach Todd Gober said the Cougars played "scrappy," especially on defense. SIUE collected 56 digs led by 15 from Allison Buss (Towanda).
         "The difference in today's game was from the serving line," said Gober. "It was good and aggressive. They were out of system often," The Cougars finished with five service aces.
         Heather Bonde (Millstadt) led all players with 15 kills while hitting .333 for the match. Kate Hofeldt (Antioch) and Kindra Westendorf (Effingham) added 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
         As a team, SIUE hit .278 for the match with 18 kills in game one, 21 kills in game two, and 16 kills in game three. Krystal Majernik (Normal) paced SIUE with 39 assists.
         Ferris State hit .147 for the match as Lauren Heine led the Bulldogs with nine kills.
         SIUE next faces Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Rockhurst at 5 p.m. Friday. Rockhurst, the No. 2 seed, ousted seventh-seeded Hillsdale in three games on Thursday.
