ALLENDALE, Mich. -- A pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball rivals faced each other for the third time this season. And Rockhurst won the biggest of the three matches with a 30-27, 30-27, 30-21 win over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
SIUE had its 19-match winning streak snapped and completed the season with a 28-6 record. Rockhurst, 29-6, moves on to face the winner of Northwood and Grand Valley State.
The Cougars' Kim Potthast finished with a team-best 11 kills. GLVC Player of the Year Heather Bonde, a senior, was held to just six kills. Fellow seniors Tina Talsma and Kindra Westendorf finished with nine kills each.
Rockhurst and SIUE both managed 10 blocks in the contest, but the Hawks' offense downed the Cougars. Tammie Rech led the Hawks with 15 kills. Karla Schroff had 14 kills while Fabiana Borsari added 12 kills on no errors. Rockhurst hit .258 for the match, holding SIUE to a .155 hitting percentage.
As SIUE's season closes, the Cougars will say goodbye to seven seniors. Bonde, Talsma, Westendorf, Allison Buss, Melissa Spann, Jenny Heimann and setter Krystal Majernik posted a 99-30 record over the last four seasons, including a mark of 51-9 in GLVC play.
