Cougars Open With Two Shutouts

         MEMPHIS, Tenn. - No. 15-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball began the 2007 season where it left off last year.
         The Cougars were 3-0 winners over Ouachita Baptist and Ft. Hays State in day one of the Christian Brothers Classic. SIUE, 2-0, opened with a 30-19, 30-27, 30-23 victory over Ouachita Baptist and followed it up with a 30-10, 30-19, 30-22 win over Ft. Hays State.
         SIUE picked up some big numbers from middle hitters Samantha Schulte and Kelsey Hubert. Schulte led all Cougars with 20 kills, hitting a crisp .667. Hubert led the team in average kills with 4.75 per game, 19 in four games.
         Defense proved again to be a strength for the Cougars. SIUE's opponents hit just .029 for the day, managing only eight kills per game against the Cougars.
         SIUE doubled its opponent's kill total with 17.83 per game. Along with Schulte and Hubert, outside hitters Kate Hofeldt and Emily Rahn and setter Mallory Clements each recorded double figures in kills.
         The Cougars continue play at the Christian Brothers Tournament Saturday. SIUE faces Harding at noon and hbost Christian Brothers at 2 p.m.
