SIUE Volleyball Travels to Colorado

Box Score
Samantha Schulte August 27, 2007

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The No. 15-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball finished the first weekend of play a perfect 4-0.
With the Christian Brothers Tournament behind them, the Cougars can now look forward to Colorado Premier Challenge, which will take place on the campuses of Metro State and Regis. The Cougars' schedule Friday includes No. 14-ranked West Texas A&M at noon and host Metro State at 3:30 p.m.
After those two matches, the remaining teams will be placed in gold, silver and bronze brackets based on their Friday finish. Regardless of how SIUE plays Friday, it will likely see another top 25 team. Minnesota-Duluth (No. 2), Central Missouri (No. 12), Chico State (No. 13), and California State-Los Angeles (No. 17) are all in the field.
"We can't look by anyone," said SIUE coach Todd Gober. "We have to look at it as an opportunity."
The Cougars took advantage of its opportunities on week one of the season, blanking Ouachita Baptist and Fort Hays State and then winning in four games against Harding and Christian Brothers. Mallory Clements (Mt. Pulaski) was named the Most Valuable Player of the CBU Tournament. Kelsey Hubert (Freeburg) was named a member of the All-Tournament team.
"I'm very pleased with our record and how we played," said Gober. "We played smart, especially for this early in the season. There were a lot of bright spots."
Samantha Schulte (Kenosha, Wis.) posted the biggest numbers of the weekend. The middle hitter finished with a stellar .517 hitting percentage with 55 kills. Hubert was equally as strong with a .436 hitting percentage and a team-leading 1.50 blocks per game.
Gober spent most of the weekend tweaking his lineup, especially on defense.
Sadie Zurliene (Aviston), Jenny Gilman (Springfield), and Tiffany Turner (Mt. Pulaski) all took turns as the team's libero. "There were times that we had to come from behind this past weekend. We really shows an ability to adjust," said Gober.
