SIUE Splits Premier Opening Day

         DENVER, COLO. - The No. 15-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball team split its first two matches at the Colorado Premier Challenge.
         SIUE fell to 14th-ranked West Texas A&M 30-22, 30-24, 24-30, 30-28. The Cougars were victorious in the second match of the daya against host Metropolitan State 30-27, 21-30, 30-21, 30-28.
         SIUE Coach Todd Gober and his Cougars will await the rest of the day's results before knowing who Saturday's opponents will be and where the games will be played. Metro State and Regis, both in Denver, are co-hosts for the tournament, which will break up into three mini-tournaments for Saturday. On its finish Friday, SIUE will be placed in the Silver Bracket.
         Mallory Clements (Mt. Pulaski) was a bright spot in the West Texas A&M loss. Clements posted her 11th career triple-double of double digits in three offensive categories. The junior setter recorded 40 assists, 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Clements tied Michelle Gilman (1995-98) for the Cougar triple-doubles record.
         The Cougars hit .144 against West Texas A&M but didn't find their rhythm. SIUE had 11 blocks led by seven from Samantha Schulte (Kenosha, Wis.)
         Schulte led the team in kills against Metro State with 16. Kelsey Hubert (Freeburg) was the steadiest of the day with 10 kills against West Texas A&M and 14 against Metro State.
