KANSAS CITY, MO. -- No. 15-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball outdueled 20th-ranked Rockhurst with a 28-30, 34-32, 30-23, 30-18 victory Friday night.
SIUE improved to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, handing the Hawks their second straight loss. Rockhurst is 9-3 overall and 2-2 in GLVC play.
SIUE volleyball now has won 35 consecutive GLVC regular season matches and will face Drury Saturday at 3 p.m. in Springfield, Mo. The Panthers were the last team to defeat the Cougars in the regular season back in the 2005.
The Cougars repeated the feel of last season's victory in Kansas City over Rockhurst, losing the first game and then sweeping three straight. It took a comeback in game two to send the surging Cougars ahead.
Mallory Clements (Mt. Pulaski) led all players with 15 kills. The SIUE setter also broke the school record with her 12th career triple-double, adding 58 assists and 15 digs to her totals. Clements hit a team-leading .324 and helped five other Cougars garner double digits in kills.
Kelsey Hubert (Freeburg) and Emily Rahn (Waukesha, Wis.) recorded 14 each. They were followed by 13 from Samantha Schulte (Kenosha, Wis.), a career-high 11 from Sydney Winslow (Farmington, Mo.), and 10 from Kate Hofeldt (Antioch).
SIUE started out strong on game one, taking an early 7-2 lead. Led by the serving of Rockhurst's Audrey Boese and Emily Crowley, the Hawks sped past the Cougars to take game one. Boese led the Hawks with 14 kills
Rockhurst fell behind the Cougars 4-0 in game two but rallied to take an 18-13 lead just after an SIUE timeout. SIUE crept back into the game behind three kills from Hubert and tied the score 30-30. The Cougars averted a game point at 31-30 and went on to use a kill from Winslow to put the game away.
SIUE controlled the tempo of the match from there, minimizing its attack errors in games three and four. The Cougar defense collected 98 digs, including 24 from Tiffany Turner (Mt Pulaski).
