IOWA CITY, Iowa - Six players scored in double figures Friday night to lead the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 111-50 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in men's basketball at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

"We have to be able to compete better than we did tonight," SIUE head coach Lennox Forrester said. "We didn't have enough guys fired up to play."

The Hawkeyes and Cougars initially traded baskets and a pair of Anthony Mitchell jumpers had the Cougars and Hawkeyes tied at four. That's as close as the Cougars would get.

From there, Iowa, 3-3, went on an 11-0 run and outscored SIUE 49-16 the rest of the half to lead 53-20 at the break. The 33-point deficit at half is the largest faced by the Cougars this season.

SIUE went on a 5-0 run to start the second half, but it was little consolation. Iowa shot 60.6 percent from the field in the second half and 58.7 percent for the game.

The Cougars, playing their third game in six days shot just 34 percent from the field for the game. SIUE, 1-5, committed a season-high 29 turnovers.

"Are our guys getting tired? Probably." Forrester said. "But I'm not a guy to make excuses."

Mitchell and Abel Tillman both scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds to lead the way for the Cougars. Tillman added two blocked shots and a steal. He was 4 of 7 from the floor.

"I thought those guys battled inside," Forrester said. "Abel battled on the boards and blocked some shots. Anthony came out and gave us a positive start."

Cornelius Chatt also scored eight points in the loss.

Zach McCabe paced the attack for Iowa with 16 points. Melsahn Basabe added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

The 11 points allowed are the most allowed by a Cougar team since South Dakota scored 116 during the 2008-2009 campaign. The 61-point margin of defeat matches the largest in school history. SIUE dropped a 109-48 decision to UMSL during the 1967-68 season.

SIUE returns home to host Morehead State Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. The game is the second of a double-header. The women host Saint Louis beginning at 1 p.m.
