FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's and women's tennis teams dropped its opening match in Florida Monday afternoon as the men fell 6-1 to Florida Gulf Coast University and the women lost a 7-0 decision to Troy University.
SIUE's women opened its trip with a neutral site match against Troy University at the FGCU Tennis Complex where the Trojans swept the Cougars 7-0.
Troy claimed the doubles point with wins at all three positions before sweeping through the six singles spots to earn the victory.
Sophomore Amanda Miller had the closest match for the Cougars falling in three sets to the Trojans' Olivia Battye 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6), at the No. 6 singles position.
The loss dropped the SIUE women to 2-5 on the spring while the Trojans moved to 3-8.
The Cougar men got their Spring Break week started in the right direction taking the doubles point. Paulo Gonzalez and Justin Spicer earned an 8-1 victory over FGCU's Carlo Checchia and Dean Tsamas at No. 1 doubles.
The No. 3 doubles team of Devan Faulkenberg and Ryan Vogt defeated the Eagles' Collin Brown and Mitchell Lvovsky to get the first point of the match.
The momentum quickly changed as FGCU swept SIUE in singles action to win the match 6-1, improving to 2-7 on the year. The loss kept the Cougars winless at 0-6 this spring.
The SIUE men and women return to the courts Tuesday against Lehigh at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
