CARBONDALE, Ill. - Senior Laura Horning got
the only point for the SIUE women's tennis team in a 6-1 loss at
SIU Carbondale Sunday afternoon.
"The result was certainly not what we were hoping for," said
SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "We
saw glimpses of how good we can be, but we also saw glimpses of our
youth today."
The loss drops the Cougars to 4-4 overall while the Salukis
remain unbeaten at 3-0.
Horning defeated SIU Carbondale's Gisela Cairo Baza in straight
sets 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 5 singles position as she improved her
record to 6-1 in singles action this season.
"I am happy the way Laura stepped up again for us," added
Coomer. "She played one of the best matches of her career, and
continues to show improvement every time she steps on the
court."
The Salukis picked up the first point by sweeping the three
doubles positions before claiming the first five singles matches of
the afternoon.
SIUE closes its season-long, seven-match road stretch with a
contest at Western Kentucky March 2.
