Box Score MOREHEAD, Ky. – Kali Donner provided the lone point for SIUE women's tennis in a 4-1 Ohio Valley Conference loss at Morehead State.
SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer said the Cougars were coming off a strong performance against Eastern Kentucky but were not as sharp as they needed to be against Morehead State.
"Our effort was definitely there, but unfortunately we didn't get the results we needed," Coomer said.
Donner defeated Morehead State's Dominique McLean 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
"Kali played well today," said Coomer. "Playing on a fast surface was to her advantage, and she handled it nicely."
Morehead State, 5-8 overall and 2-0 in the OVC, won the doubles point and three singles matches to take the victory. The dual was halted with two singles matches still to be finished. The teams were playing indoors at the three-court Eagle Center due to poor weather conditions.
Coomer said he had to adjust his doubles lineup due to an illness. That affected two of three doubles teams.
The Cougars were ahead in the doubles match that went unfinished. Lexi Aranda and Haley Ilcewicz were pulled from the court in their match against Morehead State's Sandrine Beaule and Dominique McLean when the doubles point was clinched.
Coomer said the two singles matches that went unfinished also had the Cougars leading. Sierra Halverson was up a set and leading in the second set at No. 5 singles. Ilcewicz was playing in the third set at No. 4 singles.
SIUE, now 5-7 overall and 0-2 in the OVC, play its first home conference match next Saturday. Jacksonville State comes to SIUE for a 1:30 p.m. match in Edwardsville.
"We will look to rebound with some good training sessions this week as we get ready for Jacksonville State," said Coomer.
