Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE and Butler played 110 minutes of soccer and finished with a 1-1 draw in double overtime Saturday night at Korte Stadium. The Cougars have now played four consecutive overtime games to start the season.
"We were pleased to carry the run of play. We were pleased to create a number of chances," SIUE Co-Head Coach David Korn said. "We're disappointed that we didn't finish the game off."
Senior Christian Volesky netted his third goal of the season in the game's fifth minute. Jason Hackett took a pass at the top of box, slipped around his defender to the right and then slid a pass to Volesky who finished from 10 yards out making it 1-0.
Butler (2-0-2) equalized in the 14th minute when Caleb Postlewait converted a penalty kick.
The Cougars controlled the remainder of the half, ending the period with a 8-1 advantage in shots. Butler opened the second half with numerous opportunities, including several chances on goal but the SIUE defense held strong.
Cougar goalkeeper Kent Kobernus made three saves, including two in the second 45 minutes.
"We made a mistake in the first half that led to their penalty kick," Korn added. "Our team's composure in the second half and overtime was a big reason we came out with a tie."
Less than three minutes into overtime SIUE was awarded a penalty kick. Volesky took the kick and missed off the left post.
The thing to take away is that (Volesky) was courageous enough to step up and take it and believed he could make it," Korn said. "Like any athlete if you're going to be in those moments sometimes you are going to miss."
Korn spoke to Volesky after the game.
"I told him a big reason that we had an opportunity to win is because he came up with a goal early in the game for us and because of the work that he did over the course of 90 minutes," Korn continued. "It wasn't because of that moment that we didn't come out with a win. We had plenty of chances to finish it in the run of play."
For the game SIUE finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots. Eight of the Cougars' shots were on target, including four by Volesky.
Butler goalkeeper Eric Dick made seven saves for the Bulldogs.
SIUE returns to the road Wednesday for a matchup at UMKC. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
