CHARLESTON, Ill. – SIUE men's and women's cross country opened up their seasons with second place team finishes in the Walt Crawford Open.
The men's race was shortened to a four-mile race instead of an 8K due to heat conditions, but two Cougars were able to record top-five finishes. Junior Keith Meyer finished third with a time of 20 minutes, 15.14 seconds, and senior Scott Woodard recorded a fourth place finish in 20:23.66.
Senior Clint Kliem placed eighth, running the four miles in 20:51.08. Rounding out the top five for the Cougars was Ben Scamihorn (21:13.62) and Tyler Owens (21:27.00).
The men's team totaled 50 points, finishing ahead of SIU Carbondale and IPFW. Eastern Illinois won the race with 30 points.
The women's team also finished second with a one-minute personal best time from junior Erin Kennedy, who finished ninth in 19:13.59. All four of the women's team finished in the top 20, including Haley Miller in 13th (19:20.54), Allie Sweatt in 14th (19:45.26), Conradette King in 15th (19:47.88), and Jess Clarke in 18th (20:35.17).
The women's team tallied 69 points, finishing ahead of IPFW and SIU Carbondale. Eastern Illinois also won the women's race with 21 points.
"Today was a great start to a fresh season," said Distance Coach Kayla Brown. "We laid down a basis to work from, and we can see what pieces of our races need adjustments. Our focus is to close gaps between each other in future races."
The Cougars next race is the Country Financial ISU Invite Friday, Sept. 11.
