Sam Gomez Earns National Ranking

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer goalkeeper Sam Gomez (St. Louis) is garnering national attention.

The graduate student has landed at No. 54 on TopDrawerSoccer.com's National College Soccer Player Midseason Rankings released Thursday. He is the third-highest rated goalkeeper on the list.

Gomez has played all 1260 minutes in 14 games this year, while allowing just nine total goals. He is fourth in the NCAA with an .856 save percentage and ranks 11th in the country in goals against average at 0.64. His six shutouts are tied for No. 9 nationally.

"Sam is a great leader and is so dedicated to his craft," SIUE Head Coach Cale Wassermann said. "He's a senior captain and has put in so much time and effort to get to where he is now; and is getting the recognition he deserves."

The graduate student has claimed six of a possible eight Goalkeeper of the Week awards from the Ohio Valley Conference.

Gomez has helped guide SIUE to an unbeaten season. SIUE is 11-0-3 and one of just four teams in the NCAA without a loss this year.

"The team deserves a lot of credit along the way, but Sam is well deserving of being recognized as one of the top goalkeepers in the country," Wassermann added.

The Cougars welcome Southern Indiana to Korte Stadium for a 5 p.m. game Sunday with a chance to clinch the OVC regular season title.
