MARTIN, Tenn. – SIUE volleyball took the opening set from UT Martin, but the Skyhawks rallied off three consecutive set victories for a 3-1 decision on Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Fieldhouse. The set scores were: 25-21, 27-29, 23-25, and 19-25.
SIUE falls to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in Ohio Valley Conference play. UT Martin improves to 8-14 and 6-6.
The entirety of the match played back and forth, featuring 37 ties and 15 lead changes. SIUE used a .208 attack percentage on 16 kills in the opening frame to grab a 1-0 lead before the Skyhawks regrouped in the second, using a .286 clip while holding SIUE's attack to .167 to tie the match, 1-1.
In the third set and knotted 23-23, UT Martin grabbed the final two points of the set on back-to-back kills to take a 2-1 advantage. In the fourth, the Skyhawks hit their best attack percentage of the contest at .353 to upsend the Cougars, 3-1.
The Cougars concluded the match with a .195 clip while picking up nine blocks, 64 digs, 47 assists, and seven service aces. UT Martin wrapped the contest with a .268 attack percentage.
Inside the Numbers:
- Priscilla Jones and Chelsey Abel led SIUE with 12 kills apiece. Abel tallied 22 attacks for a .409 clip while Jones was credited with 25 opportunities for a .320 attack percentage. Abel led the Cougars with five total blocks while Jones added four.
- Sydney Hummert (3), Jenna Taphorn (2), and Bree Schreimann (2) also collected multiple blocks in the match.
- Alyse Drifka handed out 20 assists while collecting 14 digs for a double-double. The junior setter leads SIUE with 12 double-doubles this season. Grace Beekman handed out 19 assists while tallying nine digs.
- Defensively, the Cougars were led by Hummert's 15 digs. Freshman Abi Banitt also collected double-digit digs with 11 while Corinna Jones added nine.
- At the service line, Paige Montgomery recorded a pair of service aces, a career high mark for the sophomore. Priscilla Jones also added a pair of service aces.
