Savannah DeFini scored on a header from six yards out at 77:34 as SIUE women's soccer tied Western Illinois 1-1 Thursday at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
After just having been fouled on the right side of the field, DeFini ran to her position near the goal and awaited a free kick from
Macie Begley. WIth a perfectly-placed pass near the goal, DeFini headed it just below the crossbar for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
SIUE is now 1-6-4 with Thursday's tie. Western Illinois is now 1-9-1.
The Leathernecks picked up their goal at 36:46 when Landry McCoid hit from 10 yards out on a pass from Callie Murtrey.
SIUE recorded a season-best 23 shots, outshooting Western Illinois by 15 shots.
Taryn Moore provided five shots while DeFini added three.
Next up for the Cougars is a Sunday home matchup against Eastern Illinois. Game time is 2 p.m. at Korte Stadium.
