EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -
Macie Begley connected in the 88th minute Sunday as SIUE women's soccer defeated Eastern Illinois 2-1 at Korte Stadium.
Begley scored the game winner from 10 yards out after quick passes on the right side of the box from
MaryClaire Imig and
Savannah DeFini at 87:37. It was Begley's first goal of the season.
The victory was SIUE's first Ohio Valley Conference triumph of the season as the Cougars improved to 2-6-4 overall and 1-2-2 in league play. EIU dropped to 3-6-5 overall and 1-2-2 in the OVC.
SIUE's offense outshot Eastern Illinois 15-8, but it was the Panthers who scored first. Abby Reinl scored from five yards out at 56:46 from Avery Richardson to put the Panthers up 1-0.
The Cougars didn't allow Eastern Illinois to hold the lead for very long.
DeFini scored from six yards out at 58:44 on a pass from Imig. It was her fifth goal of the season and the second of the week.
Abby Haskell earned the win in goal for the Cougars and had four saves. Ella Kratchovil collected six saves for the Panthers.
SIUE heads to the road for the next two contests. The Cougars face Tennessee Tech next Sunday in Cookeville, Tennessee. SIUE then faces Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, October 17th.
