EDWARDSVILL, Ill – SIUE volleyball (3-6) faced off against the Bellarmine Knights (2-7) to conclude their final game of the Cougar Classic Tournament. The Cougars and Knights battled through all five sets, with SIUE winning sets one, four and five (25-22, 25-19,23-21) and Bellarmine winning two sets (25-19, 25-22).
This evening matchup marked the Cougars first five-set victory. Set five went point for point, with the Cougars having six opportunities to get the match point. At the 17 point of the set Bellarmine challenged with an in/out call overturning the original out call gaining a point. The set continued until SIUE won 23-21.
Overall, the five-set game allowed for two double-doubles.
Ainsley Ranstead had 13 kills hitting at a .265 clip, and 10 digs.
Alyse Drifka had 22 assists and 12 digs. These are the fist double doubles of the season for the Cougars.
Inside the Numbers
- Corinna Jones has the second highest assists of the match at 18. She also had eight digs.
- Nicole Medlin led the team with 15 kills at a .344 clip. Medlin attributed three digs and four block assists.
- Taya Nordmann led the team with nine block assists and one solo block.
- As a team the Cougars tallied up 53 kills, five service aces, 16 blocks, 50 assists and 71 digs.
The Cougars finished out their first home tournament going 2-3 knocking Bellarmine off their hot streak. Up next the Cougars take on SIU Carbondale Sep. 20 at 3:00 p.m.
