Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Ashley Bey became the single-season steals leader for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball Saturday, but Seattle didn't join in the celebration.
Seattle edged the Cougars 63-57 at the Vadalabene Center just seven days after taking a 31-point victory on its home court.
SIUE Coach Amanda Levens said the Cougars came out ready to play against the Redhawks.
"We did a better job tonight rebounding than we did last Saturday. But give Seattle credit, they made tough shots," said Levens. Seattle held a 43-35 advantage in rebounding.
Levens said she has seen improvement as the Cougars have won four of their last six games with both losses coming from Seattle.
"We have been playing more as a team as the year has gone on," said Levens.
The win helped Seattle improve to 12-7 while the Cougars fell to 5-18.
Bey turned in a sharp second half by scoring all 15 of her points over the final 20 minutes of play. Bey, who was SIUE's leading scorer, sat for all but four minutes of the first half because of foul trouble.
The junior guard grabbed three steals to pass former All-American Misi Clark for the single-season record. Bey now has 94, breaking an 11-year-old record.
"Bey's anticipation allows her to get steals," said Levens.
Seattle held a seven-point lead at halftime but watched as the Cougars roared back in the second half. The Redhawks were scoreless for nearly seven minutes during a span in the second half as SIUE took a 45-44 lead with 9:43 to play on a pair of free throws by center Sydney Winslow.
After both teams traded baskets, Seattle took control down the stretch, led by Cassidy Murillo and Chelsie Morrison. Murillo scored a game-high 19 points while Morrison added 18.
SIUE hit one more field goal and two more three-pointers, but the difference came on the free throw line. Seattle hit 19 of 26 from the line while SIUE struggled by hitting 9 of 17.
The Cougars will now prepare for their final game of the homestand, a 7 p.m. matchup against Miami (Fla.) of the Atlantic Coast Conference. It will be Pink Zone Night at the Vadalabene Center with all fans being encouraged to wear pink to draw attention to cancer prevention.
