          BOCA RATON, Fla. - Two Southern Illinois University Edwardsville outdoor records fell at the opening of the 2009 track and field season.
          Steven Werths ran a new best at 3,000 meters with a time of 8 minutes, 57.46 seconds. Valery Taylor also set a new long jump record with a leap of 18 feet, 9.25 inches.
          SIUE was competing at the Florida Atlantic University Twilight Meet, the first outdoor meet of the season.
          The Cougars were well represented with first-place awards at the meet. The SIUE winners included Brent Rehkemper (high jump), Eric Mammoser (pole vault), Ben Bishop (shot put and hammer throw), Megan Dennis (400-meter hurdles), Marcus Evans (400-meter hurdles), and Kayla Brown (1,500-meter run).
          The Spring Classic is next up for SIUE. It takes place March 27-28 in Carbondale.
