CARBONDALE, Ill. - Alphonso Shepherd (Dayton, Ohio) won the 200-meter dash Saturday at the McDonald's Classic.

Shepherd nearly pulled off a double sprint victory. He won the 200-meter event in 22.35 seconds and finished second in the 400-meter dash in 50.12. Both were season bests for the Cougar senior.

SIUE placed fourth in a field of five teams at the event held at Southern Illinois Carbondale. Host Southern Illinois won the team title with 175 points followed by Memphis with 101, Central Arkansas with 71, SIUE with 63 and Indiana with 7.

Ben Bishop (Cantrall) was crowned tops in the weight throw for the fifth time during this indoor season. His throw of 66 feet, 8.5 inches, equaled the mark posted by Southern Illinois' J.C. Lambert.

The Cougars also took two of the top four spots in the triple jump. Maurice Jackson (Homewood) and Andrew Thierry (Galesburg) placed second and fourth with respective jumps of 46-2 and 43-9.25.

Next up for the SIUE men's track and field team is a two-day meet in Allendale, Mich., as the Cougars travel to Grand Valley State next Friday.
