Box Score WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Looking for its sixth-consecutive win,
the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball
team jumped out to a 7-0 lead at Purdue but could not keep pace
with the Boilermakers falling 69-39 from Mackey Arena Thursday
night.
"Coming in we knew we had to make shots, and we didn't," said
SIUE Head Coach Amanda Levens. "If
we make some of those shots, it's a different game."
Half of the shots attempted by the Cougars, now 7-13, came from
behind the three-point line. SIUE made 6 of its 28 shots from
behind the arc.
The 28 three-point attempts tie the most in a single game by the
Cougars this season.
"To get that many opportunities, we have to make more than one
or two each," added Levens.
Sophomore Raven Berry banked
home a three-pointer 2:15 into the game putting SIUE ahead 7-0.
Berry finished the game as the only player to record a
double-double, her sixth of the season, with 12 points and 10
rebounds.
"Raven did a great job posting up and just needed more touches,"
said Levens.
Purdue carried the play the rest of the game scoring 17 of the
game's next 19 points to take a 17-9 lead, and never looked
back.
For a stretch of five minutes late in the first half, the
Cougars were held scoreless as the Boilermakers dominated inside
the paint taking a 35-20 advantage heading into halftime.
In the second half, Purdue continued to add to its lead with a
late 10-2 run before closing out the game 69-39.
The Boilermakers' Alex Guyton led all scorers with 16 points
while Antionette Howard added 10 points off the bench.
With the win, Purdue improved to 14-7 on the year and 11-1 at
Mackey Arena against unranked opponents.
Senior Whitney Champlin
gave the Cougars a spark in the second half coming off the bench
and scoring four points, grabbing a rebound, and recording a block
in just seven minutes of action.
Freshmen Jazmin Hill and
Valerie Finnin scored 10 and eight points, respectively for SIUE.
Hill, the Cougars' leading scorer, committed a season-high seven
turnovers in the loss.
"It is a great learning game for our younger players," added
Levens.
SIUE will return to action Tuesday in the opening game of a
Cougar basketball doubleheader against Southeast Missouri. Tip-off
for the women is schedule for 5:30 pm with the SIUE men to
follow.
