LINCOLN, Neb. - Led by its freshmen class, the SIUE men's track and field team closed the second day of the Holiday Inn Invitational with 10 finishes in the top 10 at Devaney Sports Center Saturday.
"We were encouraged with what we saw from the team as a whole," said SIUE Head Coach Kareem Jackson. "We will only run, jump, and throw as well as we practice, and we have to get better at learning how to duplicate speed."
Freshman Ahmad Evans sprinted to a seventh-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 22.13 in his first collegiate competition. The time was the third fastest all-time at SIUE. Evans also finished eighth in the 60 meters in a time of 7.05 seconds, but his preliminary time of 6.98 seconds ranked second in SIUE indoor history.
Fellow freshman Greg Block turned in a third-place performance in the shot put throwing 50 feet, 4.75 inches while sophomore Jamil Mashni (49-0.75) was not far behind in fifth.
The freshman class continued to make an impact for the SIUE men as La'Derrick Ward followed his top-ten performance Friday with another quality finish in the triple jump placing 10th with a mark of 44-11.5.
Junior William Lindsey could not match his preliminary time of 8.09 seconds in the 60 hurdles final but was still able to finish fifth with a time of 8.19.
Lindsey later led a trio of Cougars to top-ten finishes in the 600 meters placing sixth in a time of 1 minute, 21.14 seconds, which moved him into second place all-time at SIUE. Braxton Klavins (1:21.82) and Marc Presley (1:23.40) finished eighth and 10th, respectively.
Lindsey, Klavins, Presley, and Ward teamed up for a sixth-place finish in the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:20.40 to close the weekend.
"We will get some much needed rest over the next couple days then get ready for our next meet at the University of Illinois," added Jackson.
The Cougars return to the track at the Illini Classic Jan. 20 and 21.
