Cougars Fall to Racers 67-59

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Raven Berry recorded her 17th career double-double Saturday but the Cougars overall did not shoot well as a team down the stretch in a 67-59 loss to Murray State.

SIUE dropped to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference in a game that saw some superlative play from a handful of Cougars. The overall numbers just weren't on the Cougars' side.

"We had a lot of people do a lot of good things individually but as a team, we did not do enough to get it done," said SIUE Head Coach Amanda Levens.

SIUE shot 28.2 percent (11-39) from the field in the second half after being tied with the Racers at halftime. Murray State improved to 7-11 overall and 4-3 in the OVC.

Jazmin Hill collected four three-point baskets and scored a team-high 18 points. It was Hill's biggest offensive output since scoring 28 against Bradley on Dec. 6. With her four three-pointers, Hill tied teammate Melia Duncan for fifth on the all-time three pointers list with 119.

"Jazmin played well and had a good bounce back after last weekend. I knew she would come out and be very motivated," said Levens.

Berry was a force on the boards with 14 rebounds to match her 10 points. SIUE outrebounded Murray State 43-38.

Courtney Kenner recorded 10 of SIUE's 16 assists while adding eight points and six rebounds. Her 10 assists was a career high for the Cougar junior.

Katie Hempen scored 10 points and energized her team by taking four charges on defense.

Murray State turned the ball over 19 times, but SIUE only converted those turnovers into eight points. The Cougars, meanwhile, committed just 14 turnovers, but the Racers capitalized for 18 points.

The Racers' Erica Burgess led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Mariah Robinson and Tessa Elkins joined Burgess in doubles figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Murray State shot 41.8 percent (23-55) for the game and finished with 10 three-pointers.

"We just did not play well," said Levens. "We did not do enough defensively to disrupt them. We could not execute some of the things we worked on in practice, and they made us pay for it."

SIUE next faces Austin Peay Monday in a 7 p.m. contest at the Vadalabene Center.
