AMES, Iowa - A pair of top 10 finishes by sophomore Braxton Klavins led the SIUE men's track and field team over the weekend at the Iowa State Classic.

"It was an exciting meet," said SIUE Head Coach Kareem Jackson. "All our athletes performed well. They had to rise to the occasion with such great competition at the meet."

Klavins had an impressive day turning in a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 21.95 and followed with an eighth-place finish in the 400 meters running a personal best 48.22.

His time in both the 200 and 400 meters were the second-fastest run in SIUE history.

Klavins recorded three of the eight personal bests for the Cougars during the meet.

Freshman Ahmad Evans and Klavins narrowly missed reaching the finals of the 60 meters as Evans finished .01 seconds outside the qualifying times posting a mark of 6.96 while Klavins was right behind at 6.99.

The times for each did earn a spot on the all-time best list at SIUE with Evans now holding the second position in the 60 meters and Klavins behind in third.

"I knew I had the potential, and I really wanted to break seven seconds," said Klavins. "I knew I could, and that gave me motivation moving into the 400."

Junior William Lindsey reached Saturday's final in the 60 hurdles with an eighth-place preliminary time of 8.13 seconds.

Thayer Harrison leaped 46 feet, 8.75 inches, in the triple jump to place third, leading the Cougars in the field events.

Freshman Greg Block sparked the SIUE throwers with a 12th-place finish in the shot put throwing 49-10.

"I am pleased with our performance this week, but we still know there are areas we need to continue working," added Jackson. "We are getting closer as a team to having all event groups executing at their best."

The Cougars will continue their training over the upcoming weeks as they prepare to close the indoor season.
