Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Raven Berry recorded
her ninth double-double of the season as SIUE women's basketball
rolled to a 63-48 victory at the Vadalabene Center over visiting
Southeast Missouri.
The Cougars, now 15-9 overall and 9-4 in the Ohio Valley
Conference, used a 16-4 run in the first half to set the early
tone. The Cougars led by as many 25 points in the game and were
never threatened in the second half.
Monday's action marked SIUE's effort in Play 4 Kay - Breast
Cancer Awareness game.
"Anything we can do to help move forward towards a cure, or find
better treatment, better preventative measures, anything we can do
to advance the fight against it is a fantastic thing. It is
fantastic for our young women on both teams to play in the game and
raise their awareness, and their friends' awareness. As a culture,
it makes everything better," said SIUE Head Coach Amanda Levens.
Berry finished the game with 11 points and a season-high 17
rebounds. The junior center had nine offensive rebounds in what
would be the 21st double-double of her career.
Jazmin
Hill ended the game with 14 points, including four
three-pointers. It was the ninth time this season the Cougar
sophomore has recorded four or more three-pointers in a game.
"We had great balance," said Levens. "Jazmin got us going early,
hit some big shots, and really wanted the ball. I loved her
response to start the game. Raven had a good game again. She didn't
finish particularly well but she did a great job rebounding her
misses."
Michaela
Herrod polished off SIUE's scorers in double figures with 10
points.
Bianca Beck and Brittany Harriel led SEMO in scoring with 11 and
10 points, respectively. SEMO's record dropped to 6-20 and 3-10 in
the OVC.
The Cougars had little trouble in the first half finding
opportunities. The Cougars shot 50 percent from the field in the
opening 20 minutes. Hill had 11 of her game-high 14 points in the
first half alone.
SIUE's defense held SEMO to 30.2 percent shooting (16-53).
"I was very pleased with our team defense, especially the first
30 minutes of the game. They did a great job of executing the game
plan and playing together," Levens said.
The SIUE bench also outscored SEMO 24-13. It was a balanced
scoring effort with six from Katie Hempen, six
from Kiara
Conner, five from Madison Meade, and
seven from Tierny Austin.
"It's great to know that we can sub and go into our bench and
there is not a drop off. I was very pleased with our bench effort,"
added Levens.
The Cougars now hit the road for its three final OVC games. The
Cougars next travel to Charleston Saturday for a rematch with the
Panthers of Eastern Illinois at 4 p.m.
