OXFORD, Miss. - The SIUE men's track and field team opened the outdoor season with three record-breaking performances Saturday at the Ole Miss Invitational.
The Cougars 4x100 relay team of William Lindsey, Braxton Klavins, Darius Smith, and Ahmad Evans got the day's first record finishing sixth in a time of 40.70 seconds. The time bested the previous record of 41.46 from 2010.
Lindsey added his name to the top of the SIUE record books again, this time in the 400 hurdles where he placed third in 51.48. Lindsey passed Jonathan Bannister's mark of 51.85 set back in 2005.
Lindsey finished his day placing second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.20.
La'Derrick Ward opened his outdoor career the same way he did the indoor season, setting an SIUE record in the long jump. The freshman placed second leaping 23 feet, 9 inches to break the mark previously set by Dustin Bilbruck in 2005.
Klavins ran the 400 meters in the third-fastest time in SIUE history at 47.63.
In the triple jump, Thayer Harrison recorded the third-best all-time leap for the Cougars at 47-4.25 to finish seventh.
Marc Amarillas finished ninth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:04.38 while Kaleb Henry picked up a third-place finish in the javelin tossing 204-1.
Jamil Mashni turned in another top-ten performance for the Cougars as he placed ninth in the shot put after a mark of 50-6.75.
The Cougars continue the outdoor season April 7 at the Joey Haines Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
