SIUE Cruises Past Green Bay

Box Score

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Christian Volesky scored two goals on Tuesday as SIUE convincingly shut out Green Bay 3-0 at Aldo Santaga Stadium.

SIUE, ranked No. 25 in the College Soccer News national poll, improved to 6-2 and now opens a three-match home stand at Korte Stadium that includes nationally-ranked Dayton at 7 p.m. Saturday.

"It was a strong response by the entire team," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish of Tuesday's matchup. "To win on the road, score three goals, and get a shutout is another step in the right direction for us."

Kent Kobernus picked up the victory in goal and earned his first collegiate shutout. The Cougar sophomore finished with three saves.

"Kent had a consistent performance, which is what we ask of our goalkeepers. He was very poised. He made intelligent decisions, managed his back line, and was strong off his line. It was a solid performance not only by Kent but by the entire back four," said Kalish.

While the defense was steady, it was the offense that clicked.

Peter Kelly scored the eventual game winner at 21:49. Devon Newport served the ball off a corner kick to Kelly who headed the ball in from short range past Green Bay goalkeeper Ryan Wehking. Kalish applauded the play.

"It was a quality service and a fantastic finish by Peter. Give the two of them credit, it was very well executed," he said.

The Cougars put the Phoenix, now 2-4-1, down by two goals less than two minutes later as Volesky scored his fourth goal of the season at 23:18.

Volesky struck for his team-leading fifth goal of the season at 73:30 when Benny Jeffery's service found Volesky at the end of a strong run to the box.

"He (Volesky) is getting more consistent with each game.  He held the ball well and made good runs off the ball tonight.  It was good to see him finish off those chances." Kalish said.

SIUE outshot Green Bay 15-7 and has now outshot its opponents in each of its last four contests.

"We've been on the road quite a bit during the first third of the season and it's not easy to win on the road in Division I. Overall, I have been pleased with our approach as we have been able to stay focused on the next game and continue to pay attention to the details that will help us be successful.

"It will be a tough game Saturday. Dayton is having a fantastic year.  It will be nice to play in front of our home fans." Kalish said. "I am personally asking all of the students at SIUE to come out on Saturday and help us get a result on Saturday against Dayton."  Dayton is ranked No. 20 overall by Soccer America.
