Box Score MURRAY, Ky. – SIUE scored a season-high 31 second-chance points Saturday but couldn't overcome a pair of hot shooters in an 81-68 loss at Murray State.
The Cougars, now 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference, grabbed a season-best 52 rebounds. It was the most by an SIUE team in more than four years.
"I thought we did a nice job of getting to the offensive boards," said SIUE Head Coach Paula Buscher. The Cougars ended the game with 29 offensive rebounds, including eight from Ashley Capotosto.
Raven Berry led three SIUE players in double figures with 19 points and nine rebounds. CoCo Moore pumped in 14 points, and Tierny Austin added 12.
Murray State's answer was the backcourt duo of Mariah Robinson and Erika Sisk. Robinson hit a game-high six three-pointers and was 9 of 10 from the free throw line. She finished with 31 points. Sisk shot 8 of 16 from the field and hit Murray's two other three-pointers, collecting 26 points.
Buscher said the Cougars had good opportunities but couldn't dig out of a second-half deficit. Down 67-48 with 10 minutes to play in the second half, SIUE made a 9-0 run to cut Murray State's lead to 10.
'We fought and scratched to get out that hole," said Buscher.
Berry would foul out of the game with just more than five minutes to play. Before leaving, Berry muscled her way into No. 7 on SIUE all-time scoring list past Jenny Abert (1987-90) and Alicia Harkins (1995-97). She now has 1,284 points.
Murray State put the game away by hitting 10 free throws in the final four minutes. The Racers, 10-7 overall and 3-3 in OVC play, shot 42.1 percent for the game from the field and 80.6 percent from the free throw line.
SIUE shot 30.7 percent from the field, taking a season-high 75 shots from the field.
"I really feel like we're not that far off," said Buscher. "We have to be more focused and disciplined."
