Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Missouri State scored with just more than 10 minutes left Sunday and recorded a 1-0 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in women's college soccer action.
Both teams were deadlocked until the 79:58 mark when Jordan Reppell took a free kick, chipped it over SIUE's defense and into the goal from 20 yards out.
The win improved Missouri State's record to 8-4-1 while SIUE dropped to 7-3-1.
"It was a good game - back and forth," said SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton. "We did a lot of good things today. We played intelligent."
SIUE finished with 10 shots for the game, including three from Meagan Iffrig and two from Hope Jones. Missouri State held at shots edge in the first half 6-3, but SIUE grabbed the shot advantage in the second half 7-6.
"We created some chances. And they had some good chances at well," said Burton.
The game-winning goal, noted Burton, happened when Reppell made a quick restart. Before SIUE was able to set up its wall completely, Reppell scored. "It was a smart play by her," Burton added.
SIUE goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck finished with eight saves. Missouri State split time between its goalkeepers in the shutout. Jessica Teahan recorded two saves, and Chelsea Voet added four off the bench.
"Claire made four to five point blank saves. She came up big on a couple of plays," Burton said.
Burton said SIUE's defense was buoyed by Devon Thomas. "She played very well out of the back today. She seemed to be everywhere," he said.
The Cougars now have a week to prepare for their road trip to Drake. SIUE takes on the Bulldogs next Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa, at 1 p.m.
