EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Kristin Dierker netted the game winner for SIUE, leading the Cougars to a 1-0 win over Morehead State in Ohio Valley Conference women's soccer Friday at Korte Stadium.

SIUE is now 4-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the OVC. Morehead State drops to 6-6-3 and 2-3-1 in the OVC.

"Morehead State plays very direct," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "It's pretty simple what they're trying to do. They're testing to see if you can stand up to it. The girls did a great job of standing up to it."

Dierker's goal came with just more than nine minutes to play in the game. Rachel Brcic earned the assist after fighting to keep the ball in play along the end line. Dierker was able to bend a right-footed shot to the back post from 15 yards out.

"Rachel did a great job of just keeping that from going out of play," Burton said. "Not a lot of people have the wherewithal and the awareness to be able to do that. To her credit she kept it alive, and that is what resulted in the goal.

"Kristin did a great job of supporting the play and then putting the ball of frame," Burton continued. "We always talk about it: if it's on frame you have a chance."

SIUE senior goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck made four saves for her third shutout of the year and the 10th of her career.

The two teams played scoreless through the first 45 minutes though both teams had opportunities.

Morehead State outshot the Cougars 6-5 in the first half, including two quality chances. In the 19th minute, the Eagles' Devon Jordan broke free on the right side then bested Lovercheck with a low shot that clanged off the inside of the back post. Page Weber hit the crossbar with a shot in the 30th minute. The Cougars owned the advantage in total shots, 10-9.

SIUE hosts its final home game Sunday afternoon. Eastern Kentucky is in town for a 1 p.m. start for Senior Day.

"(The win) does great for the girls' confidence," Burton said. "It feels so much better leaving here tonight knowing we have a chance to get a two-win weekend and a chance at evening our conference record."
