Box Score CHARLESTON, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer wrapped its 2011 season
with a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon on the road at Eastern Illinois.
The Cougars finished with an overall record of 6-9-1. Sunday's win
vaulted SIUE into a sixth-place tie with EIU.
Sunday's win would also have given SIUE a berth in the OVC
Championships, but the Cougars remain ineligible for the postseason
in the final year before NCAA Division I certification.
"It's a great feeling knowing that if we could, we'd be playing
in the conference tournament," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said.
"I told the girls that this was a great example of how they've
grown as a team. It means something to go on the road and win a
conference game to get in to the tournament."
Meagan
Iffrig scored the lone tally for the day, netting her fourth
goal of the season in the 21st minute. Iffrig volleyed a waist-high
pass from Hope
Jones past EIU goalkeeper Jessica Taldone for the
game-winner.
"It was a beautiful finish," Burton said of the goal.
Iffrig finished the season as the leader in goals scored, for
the second consecutive year. She tied with teammates Devon Thomas and Michelle Auer
for the scoring lead. All three players finished with nine
points.
Claire
Lovercheck, who missed the last two games because of a foot
injury, made six saves to earn her fourth shutout this season, and
the 11th of her Cougar career, which is tied for fourth-most in
school history. Lovercheck finished her career with 193 saves,
which is third-most all time.
"It's nice to have her healthy," Burton said of Lovercheck. "She
did a great job today. She came up big on three or four chances,
including a couple of breakaways where she took the brunt of the
contact."
Lovercheck and Thomas, along with Kiara Akpore Brittany
Bodziak, Rachel Brcic and Kaci Harkey
played their final game in an SIUE Cougar uniform Sunday. Burton
commended his senior class.
"This is a great way for them to end their careers," Burton
said. "Those six players have made a distinct impression on this
program."
"We're proud of them as people, as players, as students," Burton
continued.
