CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's and women's tennis teams dropped 5-2 decisions on the road at Austin Peay Saturday afternoon.
"Both matches were much closer than the final scores indicated," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer.
After the Governor men swept through doubles play, the Cougars picked up a pair of singles matches at the bottom of the lineup.
Freshman Jacob Tanulanond rallied after dropping the first set to pull out a three-set victory over John Storie at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Senior Michael Chamberlain followed suit with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Austin Peay's Peter Conaty at No. 6 singles.
SIUE remains winless this spring at 0-5 as the Governors move to 5-2.
The SIUE women claimed the doubles point as junior Maggie Boeckman and senior Laura Horning earned an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, and the team picked up a forfeit win at the No. 3 spot.
The Cougars added to their lead with another forfeit at No. 6 singles.
Needing only a pair of singles wins to clinch the victory, SIUE could not come up with another point as the Lady Govs won the remaining five singles matches for the 5-2 decision.
"We certainly had our chances, but couldn't come up with those final points," added Coomer.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 2-4 on the season, while Austin Peay improved to 3-1 with the win.
Both SIUE teams will fly to Florida for matches from March 7-10, as the men have four matches scheduled with three on the calendar for the women.
