RICHMOND, Ky. – Nico Kuehn and Patrick Gaffigan finished the regular season with singles victories Saturday as SIUE men's tennis dropped its final Ohio Valley Conference match 5-2 at Eastern Kentucky.
Kuehn fought off two match points in the third set of his No. 4 singles match against Sabastian Mueller. The Cougar senior won the match 6-3, 6-7 (4), 11-9.
Gaffigan also was victorious in three sets at No. 3 singles. He came from behind to defeat Guillem Sanchis 5-7, 6-3, 10-5.
"Throughout the year, this team has faced a variety of challenges from injuries to circumstances well outside of their control," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "They have represented their University and themselves in a first-class manner, and I couldn't be more proud of how they conducted themselves on the court, in the classroom and in the community."
Eastern Kentucky, 18-11 overall and 7-2 in the OVC, won the doubles point and collected three straight-sets wins in singles for the team victory.
SIUE completed the regular season with an 8-14 record and a 4-5 mark in OVC play.
"I feel honored to have had the opportunity to work with such a great group of men over the past several years," said Coomer. "This team is made up of special individuals who will be very successful with the future that lies before them."
