SIUE Women's Tennis Falls Twice in Kentucky

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. - The SIUE women's tennis team hit the road and dropped a pair of Ohio Valley Conference matches to Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.

"Our team competed well this weekend against two very good teams," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "While we are not happy with the result, we will continue to work and prepare for two tough matches next week."

SIUE, now 6-11 overall and 1-5 in the OVC, opened its conference trip with a 6-1 loss at Morehead State (10-4, 3-0 OVC) Saturday night.

The Eagles (10-4, 3-0 OVC) won their eighth straight match by sweeping the three doubles spots and claiming five of the six singles positions.

The Cougars picked up their only point when senior Joanna Corkern defeated MSU's Shilpa Naruka 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

"I was proud of the way Joanna stepped into the lineup and got a win," added Coomer. "She played at a very high level."

SIUE looked to reverse its fortune on Sunday when it headed to Eastern Kentucky (11-6, 4-0 OVC) but could not muster a point in a 6-0 loss.

After EKU claimed the doubles point, the match was moved indoors due to rain. The change in venue did little to change the trend as the Colonels won all five contested singles matches for the victory.

SIUE returns to the court for a mid-week match at home against Western Illinois Wednesday.
