Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Raven Berry was SIUE's lone player in double figures Saturday in a 67-53 loss to Austin Peay at the Vadalabene Center.
Berry finished the game with her third straight double-double and 34th of her career. The senior, named the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Player of the Week Tuesday, scored 17 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and finished with a team-best three assists.
SIUE fell to 12-13 overall and 6-7 in the OVC. The Cougars will look to rebound Monday with a 7 p.m. game against Murray State. Austin Peay improved to 7-17 overall and 2-10 in the OVC.
"We didn't step on the floor and play the way we're capable of playing or the way basketball is supposed to be played," said SIUE Head Coach Paula Buscher. "I thought that was pretty evident early on. Austin Peay came out with a lot of energy, and we weren't able to match it."
Meghan Bussabarger lifted Austin Peay off the bench with 26 points, 13 in each half. The Governors pushed out to a 14-point lead at halftime after holding the Cougars to 25 percent shooting and forcing 14 turnovers.
SIUE gained hope in the second half. Down by as many as 18, the Cougars cut the lead to nine with 4:54 to play on a pair of free throws by Ashley Capotosto. It was an 11-2 run for the Cougars.
"There was a period there in the second half where we had more energy and forced some turnovers," Buscher said. "We were able to make a little run on them, but we had to big of a deficit to make up for."
Austin Peay guard Tiasha Gray, who played all 40 minutes, was the only other player scoring in double figures with 15.
SIUE outrebounded Austin 50-41 behind Berry's 14 rebounds and Tierny Austin's career high 14 rebounds.
"We don't have any time to feel sorry for ourselves," Buscher said. "We need to come together and make sure this type of performance never happens again. We're a solid team. We just have to make sure we have that we come out with the level of intensity needed to succeed."
The game also was a Pink Zone event with money raised for the St. Louis affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Numerous fund-raising events were undertaken, and breast cancer survivors were honored during the pregame and halftime ceremonies.
"It's a great event," Buscher said. "It's a chance for our athletic department and university to give back to the community, and we've had a lot of people working very hard for this cause. We've been doing a great job both raising money and raising awareness."
