Men's Tennis Can't Overcome Bruins

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Despite sweeping the three doubles matches, the SIUE men's tennis dropped a 4-3 decision to Ohio Valley Conference rival Belmont Saturday in Nashville.

In what was a back-and-forth match, the Bruins took four of the six singles matches to secure the victory.  The Cougars now post an overall record of 7-5 and are 2-2 in OVC play.

"I think we played hard across the board today, but unfortunately I don't think we competed as well as we should have in certain positions," Head Coach Jason Coomer said.  "Playing hard and competing are two very different things that our team needs to understand."

Marten Jonsson and Nico Kuehn both won their matches in singles competition, and both did so in straight sets.

"Marten and Nico played really well today," Coomer added.  "Both of them had the focus and competitive edge needed to earn winning results."

Henrique Norbiato sealed the win for Belmont by defeating Nicolas Vincent 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.  Vincent had battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the third set.

In doubles play, Jonsson and Kuehn teamed up to earn a victory and improve to 5-5 as a doubles pair.  The duos of Stephen Washuta and Jacob Tanulanond, along with Vincent and Gary Dias, also won for SIUE.

The Cougars will be in action next when they host Eastern Illinois Wednesday at 2 p.m.
