Box Score MOREHEAD, Ky. – SIUE women's soccer won a 2-1 decision against Morehead State to improve to 5-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
"Any time you can get a win on the road is great," said Head Coach Derek Burton. "A win to start the weekend is better, and even more so against a quality team."
Morehead State drops to 3-2-2 in conference. The loss marked their first loss at home this season.
SIUE freshman led the attack on the first goal. Mariah Vollmer scored in the 27th minute on an assist by Emily Grahl. The goal was Vollmer's second of the year.
A goal by Cassidy Sherman from distance put the Cougars up 2-0 in the 60th minute. The goal was assisted by Marissa Delgado. After receiving Delgado's pass, Sherman netted a ball from 30 yards out, just above the goalkeeper's head.
"Whoever gets the chance to play will be ready, whether that is defending or scoring," said Burton. "The people that play eight minutes at the end are just as important as the ones who score."
The Eagles scored late in the half on a penalty kick as a result of a hand ball called in the penalty box.
"When they got momentum from the penalty kick, we did a really good job of weathering the storm and standing tall against their attack," said Burton.
SIUE finished the game with seven shots, all from different players. Jennifer Pelley made five saves on the game, including a key save late in the game on a Morehead State chance to tie the game.
"We are happy to bounce back from last weekend," said Burton. "To turn around and compete at the level we did today was satisfying."
SIUE travels to Eastern Kentucky Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.
