Box Score RICHMOND, Ky. – SIUE women's soccer wins its second consecutive conference road game in a 3-1 decision against Eastern Kentucky.
The Cougars improve to 9-5-1 on the season and 6-1 in conference play, keeping their first place spot in the Ohio Valley Conference.
"It's great when you can get two wins on the weekend," said Head Coach Derek Burton. "Sunday games are always tough, and I'm really proud of how we started. We established our game right from the start and controlled the play."
Senior Michelle Auer scored the first goal of the game in the 14th minute. After an assist from Emily Grahl, she beat the goalkeeper one on one and easily netted the ball with an open goal. The goal was Auer's sixth on the season.
"Michelle didn't panic and showed the composure of an upperclassman," said Burton.
Cassie Smith of EKU scored the equalizer in the 29th minute.
It wasn't long before the Cougars found the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute. An Auer corner kick was headed by Cassidy Sherman before Katye Skrivan was able to find the back of the net, scoring her second goal of the year.
"We didn't panic after they scored, which is a great step for us," said Burton."
Freshman Caroline Hoefert sealed the victory for the Cougars in the 77th minute on an assist from Jorie Clawson. The header marked Hoefert's second goal this season.
"I'm really proud that Caroline got in and had a really effective game," said Burton. "She battled back from an injury and had her best game in weeks."
SIUE was able to use every position player on the roster who was available.
"It's a credit to the group," said Burton. "We have tried to stress the importance of utilizing the whole team. This is a team game, and we need everyone to be ready."
SIUE outshot the Colonels 16-11. Jennifer Pelley saved three on the game.
The Cougars travel to Jacksonville State Oct. 24 for a 7:00 p.m. match.
