HOMEWOOD, Ill. – SIUE men's tennis won four straight-sets singles matches and captured a 4-2 triumph over Chicago State.
Nico Kuehn provided the clinching point for the Cougars Saturday. After winning a first set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles against Chicago State's Julian Chavez, Kuehn sailed through the second set to win 6-5 (10-5), 6-1.
With the team victory, SIUE improved to 3-2 while Chicago State fell to 0-5.
SIUE also picked up wins from Nicolas Vincent at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dergiu Muresan. Jacob Tanulanond, now 10-2 in singles this season, bested Chicago State's Luis Olloa at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-3.
Matthew Hutchinson earned a well-played victory at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Unos Pajic. Coomer was pleased with Hutchinson's performance.
"Matt played a very good first set and an even better second set," said Coomer. "He was very aggressive in the second set and did not leave the outcome of the match in question."
The Cougars now have just less than two weeks before their next scheduled match. SIUE travels across the Mississippi River Feb. 21 to face Saint Louis.
"It was good to get a win today," said Coomer. "This team understands there is quite a bit of room for improvement. The exciting part of all of this is that we know we are capable of playing at a much higher level and look forward to achieving that."
