Cougars Fall at OVC Championships

PADUCAH, Ky. – Fourth-seeded SIUE was defeated in the Ohio Valley Conference men's tennis tournament quarterfinals 4-0 by Morehead State.

The Cougars completed the season with an 11-10 record and a 5-4 mark in OVC play. It was the first appearance for SIUE in the OVC Men's Tennis Championship as well as the program's first winning season since the 2007-2008 season.

"This was a good experience for our guys, qualifying for the postseason," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "With losing one player off the roster, we know we can get back here next season."

Morehead State, the No. 5 seed overall, improved to 10-9 overall. The Eagles raced out to an early lead by winning two of three doubles match for the first team point of the match.

"It was not the way we had envisioned it coming out today," said Coomer. "We were disappointed with the start we got off to."

Jack Swindell lifted the Eagles by winning No. 1 singles over SIUE's Nicolas Vincent 6-4, 6-2. Giovanni Samaha defeated SIUE's Matthew Hutchinson 6-3, 6-3. David Clifford downed senior Jacob Tanulanond at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-3.

Coomer said the Cougars just dug too big of hole to make a comeback. He also would have liked to see Tanulanond's last match as a Cougar go better.

"We are thankful to have had Jacob for four seasons. He has helped build a solid foundation for the team moving forward," said Coomer.
